hi I was trying to create some sprites but the object materials dont show (vertex colors)

What do you mean, the character shows all black? Could you post an image?

if I dont apply any textures to a character and just import it with vertex colors used only-
the charater looks all white - BUT only in the sprite creator- NOT in the main view
other than that fragmotion is great!

Sounds like you have the ambient color set to white in the sprite creator. Open the 'Colors' drop down, select 'Ambient' then click the color box to the left of the drop down. Choose a dark grey or black for the color. This should fix the problem.
