assigning weights to multiple bones
« on: October 06, 2006, 04:36:13 AM »

Ok..trying hard to rig my first human charakter, I don't seem to be able to assign different weights to the same vertices attached to more than one bone. Well I don't even manage to attach the same vertices to multiple bones???
Could someone please explain me how to do that...would be great (step by step...for dummies  Tongue )

Thx!

Which version are you using?

You need to make sure you are setup to do multiple bones. It's somewhere in the preferences, but I don't have access to the program right now for the exact spot.

When you're trying to assign vertices and you aren't seeing the Assign Influences dialog you'll need to open from the menu Edit/Edit Preferences,  select the Edit item and change the VertexWeights value to 4.

If you are seeing the Assign Influences dialog you need to make sure you set the channel for each bone/weight you're changing.

...also fragmo crashes when I first paint different vertex-weights (with assign bone+weight) and later try to change the weghting with the slider in the influence dialog window...is this a bug? I using the latest download 0.8.6

The crash happens if you drag the weight slider when no vertices are selected,  this has been fixed now.

Steps for assigning bones+weights (not in advanced mode)

1) Select a channel,  if any vertices are highlighted the values already set in this channel will be overwritten.
2) Select a bone in the skeleton tree or 3d view
3) Set the weight value
4) Click the large Set button,  this will set both bone and weight into the selected channel for all selected vertices

Select a different channel
repeat steps 2, 3, 4

The assignment process will be even simpler than this in version 0.8.7.

Thanks a lot for this! Now even I -considering myself as rather slow in understanding things- have managed to do proper multiple weight/bone assignements...the problem were the channels Wink

btw. how far are you with version 0.8.7? what will the main new features be? I never can wait to get the latest updates of this jewel of a software Cool

I'm probably putting my foot in my mouth again, but I'm planning on posting 0.8.7 today.  This release is mainly bug fixes but there are some new features.  A couple improvements have been made to the assignment dialog where you can select an <any> channel and when you click set the bone+weight will be set into the first available slot.  This will make it much easier when rigging a character from scratch,  you just need to remember is to set the bone+weight.   The bone can also be selected from a combo box in this dialog now.
